As we look to make our B.O.L.D. decision to DISRUPT in 2017, let me ask you 7 questions that could provoke a significant change in your leadership.
First, is your career on track to get to where you ultimately want to go?
“If you don’t know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else.”
Many don’t think they have a choice of where they want to end up. They call it fate, destiny or even “God’s will. I believe we all have choices and that ultimate choice is who we want to be and where we want to go.
People follow leaders who know who they are and where they want to go. Are you one of those leaders?
Second, do you need to change your ultimate goal for your career or the strategy to get you there?
“Life is not an easy matter… You cannot live through it without falling into frustration and cynicism unless you have before you a great idea which raises you above personal misery, above weakness, above all kinds of perfidy and baseness.” Leon Trotsky
If you look around and realize that you are not where you want to go, that is a good time to decide if you really wanted to go there in the first place. If it is, then, obviously, you need to either get back to your original strategy or change it fast.
What do you need to change to disrupt your leadership? Your ultimate destination or your strategy to get there?
Third, why do you want to go there?
“If you know the why, you can live any how.” Friedrich Nietzsche
Great leaders know why they do what they do. But even more, they know why they live and lead. Do you know your why?
Fourth, what is your strategy to get what you ultimately want?
“Vision without action is a daydream. Action with without vision is a nightmare.” —Japanese proverb
Strategy is the logical approach we use to get what we want. Unfortunately many don’t know where they are going or how they are going to get there yet they want to know what action to take next. Be smart, choose your ultimate destination and then carefully weigh which strategy is best in getting there.
Fifth, what actions will you take to implement?
“Even the most brilliant strategy is worthless without the right action at the appropriate time.” Loren Murfield
Many people make New Year’s Resolutions that they are not serious about achieving. But those who determine what they want and then construct a plan of action are the ones who disrupt.
Sixth, are your goals S.M.A.R.T.?
Are your goals
- Relevant in 2017?
- Timely (i.e. scheduled) ?
“Goals help you overcome short-term problems.” Hannah More
Seven, what are the consequences you do not disrupt your career in 2017?
Without reflection, we go blindly on our way, creating more unintended consequences, and failing to achieve anything useful. Margaret J. Wheatley
Let’s be honest with ourselves. When that clock strikes midnight and we flip the calendar next year, what will we have lost if we don’t disrupt this year?
