5 Steps to Disrupt Your Mind in 2017

With the world changing more rapidly and radically than ever before in history, we are increasingly challenged to solve problems we have never seen before.  But as leaders, we are busy and have a hard time carving out time.  No wonder many of us settle for implementing what others have done.

But imagine if we could adopt a different process for approaching our day as an entrepreneur, corporate manager or in Human Resources.  Imagine a process that is quite simple but pushing and guides you to heights you have never imagined possible.

This is the process I use to disrupt my world on a continual basis.  Take a look and let me know what you think.

First, choose to stretch your mind.  choice-1799749_1920

Making a deliberate choice is the first step in disrupting your leadership in 2017.  Are you willing to be challenged to go beyond where you have ever gone before?  Are you willing to make 2017 disruptive?

Second, go to your breaking point.  

“All my life, I struggled to stretch my mind to the breaking point, until it began to creak, in order to create a great thought which might be able to give a new meaning to life, a new meaning to death, and to console mankind.” Nikos Kazantzakis

Disruption, like physical stretching that we discussed in the previous post, often hurts.  Pushing ourselves to the breaking point is bound to cause us mental, emotional and even physical pain.  But it is worth it because it takes us to a point where we can see the disruptive opportunity.  Are you willing to go beyond your breaking point?

There is much written about building strong teams and that is valuable.  But what happens when we set aside our differences and collaborate with our competitors?  What happens when we are willing to listen to those that disagree with us?  What can we gain from reading blogs, articles and books about ideas we don’t agree with?  Trust me on this one, that is often where we find our breakthrough insights. The R.O.I. can be astounding.  How can you disrupt in 2017 by working with opposing ideas and people?  

Fourth, go beyond the best practices.  

“Smart companies fail because they do everything right. They cater to high-profit-margin customers and ignore the low end of the market, where disruptive innovations emerge from.” Clayton M. Christensen

Many leaders strive to apply and replicate business best practices.  But are you a great leader if you simply replicate what others have done?  I don’t think so.  Instead, disruptive leaders create products, services and processes that become best practices. Are you willing to take the risk, challenging accepted best practices to create something better? 

Fifth,  begin a project you can never complete.characters-1036501_1920

This may sound insane but it is perfectly logical.  Unless we are working on a project bigger than ourselves, we really are not disrupting our own thinking.  But then push it farther, imagine a project so disruptive that you will never achieve it in your lifetime.  Imagine the consistent disruption in your thinking.  Then imagine how that will take your team and your business to the disruptive level.   Are you willing to think about infinity?
