How Much do You Desire a Breakthrough?

It all begins with a burning desire, but some just don’t want success bad enough.

I’ll call him Charlie.  He came to me because he wanted help to work through certain obstacles. My first question as an executive coach to a potential client is, “What is your dream?” He quickly responded with a concise and graphic vision.  I was impressed. Many don’t know what they want but he did.   So we set a time and began working together.  He was anxious to make this happen.

He continued to impress me with his eagerness to learn, engaging at every opportunity to progress in any way he could.  He was on a mission and said nothing was going to get in his way.

That is the epitome of a desire for a breakthrough, right?

But as we worked together over the next several weeks and months, he never quite made the breakthrough. He didn’t even deliver acceptable results but rather failed time after time. So what was going on? only managed minimal progress.

Lacking a breakthrough was unacceptable to both of us.  So we doubled down on our efforts. I worked through the 9 different components we discussed in last week’s blog and he continually gave me all the right answers. Looking further, we adjusted his process and made adjustments.  Still no breakthrough.  He thought he might need more credibility so he sought out new information and certification.  He loved learning so that was no problem.  But still, there was no significant breakthrough success, despite him insisting he desperately wanted this breakthrough.

Up to this time, I had operated as if everything he said was true. I wanted to believe him but, more importantly, this is a coaching strategy to ultimately help him see his actions in an honest light. It wasn’t long before the cracks in his armor became apparent.  Finally, one day he confessed, “I am wondering if I really want this breakthrough.”

He painted a great picture but when it was time for action, he did not have the desire it took to do the job.  I could have told him much earlier but he needed to say it himself. Without that self-discovery, he would have argued with and blamed me. To make his breakthrough, he had to come to grips with how much he wanted the breakthrough.

Many say they want a breakthrough but when the game is on the line, they fail to perform to the level needed. At the same time, those that authentically desire a breakthrough prove it by taking the right action at the right time for the right purpose. They simply do not want the success enough to do what it takes to make the breakthrough happen.  Like Charlie, they may never have wanted it in the first place and puffed themselves up with grandiose dreams. They may have sold an employer on what they could do but deep down couldn’t commit.

Ask yourself 3 things to gauge your desire for a breakthrough.

First, “How often do you think about your breakthrough?”  

If it is not on your mind almost all of your waking hours, you don’t want it bad enough.

Second, “What are you willing to sacrifice to make your breakthrough happen?”

If you are not willing to sacrifice something that you enjoy for this breakthrough, you probably don’t want it bad enough.

Third, “What would happen if you never realized your breakthrough?”  

Pain propels us forward. Identify the consequence of not getting your breakthrough when you want it.

Be honest with yourself. If you don’t want it and don’t need a breakthrough, don’t pretend you want it.  It will save everyone a lot of grief.
