Many biographies overemphasize the individuality of great leaders, inventors and athletes. Those that have done great things had a great team behind them. They learned from a great leader and had great support. They knew that “if you can accomplish your goal all by yourself, it’s too small.” So how did they build their disruptive team? Maybe more importantly, how do you build your disruptive team?
In this post, we will examine 4 elements for building a disruptive breakthrough team. Maintaining the status quo isn’t good enough in the world of rapid and radical change. We need a disruptive breakthrough, a radical change.
Some of you are leaders within an organization. That means you have a team of employees and peers. Others are entrepreneurs working on their own to that build a team from vendors, business associates and even customers. In each of these cases, our team is comprised as “anyone who works with us to achieve the disruptive breakthrough.” That means to reach those seemingly “impossible” results, you need every member operating at the disruptive level. Even one person can ruin a great plan.
So how do we build that disruptive team? Let’s look at the four most important elements of building a disruptive breakthrough team.
1. Disruptive Breakthrough Goals
To breakthrough, you and your team must have radically different goals than if you were just trying to survive. That means setting goals that others will think is IMPOSSIBLE.

2. Disruptive Breakthrough Knowledge
To achieve seemingly impossible goals, you and your team will need specialized knowledge that gives you a much different perspective. Finding that knowledge will take some digging, learning and applying. But you have to do more than just find it, you must own that specialized knowledge.
Are you hungry for that knowledge? Is your team hungry for that specialized knowledge?
3. Disruptive Breakthrough Skills
Knowledge is great but until it is converted into skills, it is just good information. Your breakthrough comes when you and your team take the disruptive action, doing what others cannot. Then, and this is where it really gets good, when you can help others do what they never thought possible and do what their competitors cannot, that is when you experience your disruptive breakthrough.
Are you and your team ready, willing and able to develop those breakthrough skills?
4. Disruptive Breakthrough Attitude
The funny thing about disruptive breakthroughs are that they are as much emotional and relational as they are logical and statistical. In other words, they come from a mixture of left and right brain thinking. Logic works but until we adopt an attitude that says, “I can do this,” “I value your help,” and “I do this to help others,” the breakthrough is difficult. However, the breakthrough comes when our team adopts a better attitude, showing compassion and becoming customer centric. When they know we care, they will want to know more.
