What is Your Perspective Going into 2019?

What is your perspective as you begin 2019

As we look to be innovative and disruptive in 2019, we have to ask the foundational question, “Do I need to shift paradigms to be disruptive in 2019?”

If you have followed me, you know that I am a visionary facilitator. I work with clients to help them connect, collaborate and create what they never thought possible. Forget just trying to survive, I work with those that are determined to create their breakthrough.

In this post, I’m challenging you to take a hard look at the paradigm you follow. Is it still viable? Is it the best paradigm for disrupting in 2019?

Paradigm Defined

A paradigm is a pattern or framework through which we see the world. It is our worldview that shapes our attitudes, dictates what knowledge we will pursue, what skills we will develop and even the goals we set.

A Story

I remember an old story of a man and his grandson sitting on their front porch on a lazy afternoon. A car slowed in front of their house and came to a stop. The man leaned out the window.

“Good afternoon sir.” The man shouted.

“Beautiful day isn’t it.”

“Yes indeed. Can I ask a question?”

“What type of people live in this town. You see, I’m looking to find a community with happy people.”

“Mister, that is exactly what you will find here.”

“Great. I’ll look into it. You might just have me for a neighbor.”

With that, he drove away.

Later that day another man drove up, this time with his wife and kids along.

“Excuse me, sir. We are admiring your wonderful little town. I’m curious, what type of people live here?”

“What type of people are you looking for?”

“We want a community filled with good people. All we seem to find is disagreeable people. Everyone seems to be so angry and selfish. Is that what we will find here?”

“Sir, I’m sorry to disappoint you but you will find that here as well.”

With that, the man and his family drove off.

The grandson asked, “Grandpa, why did you tell one man that he would find good people in this town and the other that he would find disagreeable people?”

“Because you will find whatever type of people you are looking for, no matter what community you live in.

Moral of the Story

We find what we expect to find. If we are used to living in what I call an “outside-in” world where we take what we get, that is what we will find makes sense. However, if we are willing to shift paradigms and explore life from a different perspective, we will often find something new, innovative and filled with opportunities.

Are you willing to change your perspective?

Your Challenge

As we work toward a disruptive breakthrough in 2019, we are wise to re-examine our paradigm.

How do you see the world?

  1. Opportunity or Obstacle – do you see the world filled with opportunities or obstacles?
  2. Belief or Disbelief – When you someone speak of a lofty goal, which of the following do you most often think. That’s Impossible” “I’ll believe it when I see it” or “Good for them. I’m looking forward to seeing who they do it.”
  3. Limited or Unlimited – Do you see a limited potential for success or success available to everyone who is willing to work for it?
  4. Nature or Nurture – Do you believe leaders are born or developed?
  5. Internal or External – Is a person’s success dictated from uncontrolled outside factors (such as DNA, Family Legacy, or Economy or a Supernatural Deity) or created from internal factors (such as desire, determination or perseverance)?

Will 2019 be your breakthrough year or do you have to wait and see what the market allows?
