What’s Important? Setting Your Priorities in the Next Normal

What’s Important?

During this pandemic we have all had to shift our priorities from what used to be important to what is critical right now. In this post, we examine 3 ways to ask that questions to ensure our success.

Murfield Coaching works with leaders and entrepreneurs in sales, Real Estate, and business to realize their breakthrough success by thinking bigger and reaching higher than they thought possible.

The haunting question each client continually asks is, “What’s important?”

3 Questions

We discussed 3 critical questions in an earlier post:

  • What did you used to be?
  • What have you become?
  • What are you willing to become?

To be successful in these difficult times, we ask each question for a specific purpose.

First, we look back in order to recognize our historic value. Be honest, what was really important to you and your customers? Often looking back helps us to appreciate the hard lessons and true value of an experience. When we are in the moment, we often cloud the situation with our own bias or justification.

Ask yourself, what used to be important?

Second, we take a hard look at how we have changed during these strange and trying times. Difficult times force us to shift but we are so busy shifting that we often don’t take the time to step back and assess how we have changed.

Ask yourself, what has become important in these last 5 months?

Third, how will the world change once the vaccine is found and administered? In the process of looking forward, what do you anticipate being most important? That can be a very difficult question for those of us without a crystal ball.

How do we predict the future? One way is to track the trends. What are you noticing in yourself? What have you missed that you will want when the restrictions are lifted?

  • Some of these things will be what we used to find important.
  • Some will be items that we said were important but were not a priority.
  • Some will be activities that we didn’t expect.

The last one is the most difficult. That’s where listening carefully to your customers and colleagues is critical. Listen to what they have found to be important during the transition. Listen to what they think will be pursuing for in the future.

Ask yourself, what will be important in the next normal?

Now What?

Finding your breakthrough success in this transition and in the next normal requires working on what’s important. We think bigger when we revisit our priorities and focus our activities on what’s important. We all know that is beginning with the end in mind.

Every session with a coaching client ends with the question, “Now What?” What are you going to do now that you have determined what was, has become, or will be important?

It seems crazy to think you will ignore it, but some will. They go back to working on what is urgent. I understand the need to be reactive to pressing concerns. However, don’t forget to work on what’s important.

Set your priorities like this.

  1. Important and Urgent
  2. Important but not yet Urgent
  3. Urgent but not Important
  4. Not Urgent and Not Important

Your success will be determined by how much you delivered what was important.

“The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.”
