What if You Were Audacious in 2022?

What if I told you 2022 could be your breakout year?

What if you were bolder than you have ever been?

What if you tackled that problem that has kept you from your breakthrough?

You will never become a disruptive innovator, an effective leader, or lead any significant change by making excuses and playing it safe.

In a recent post, I challenged you to declare what you ultimately want in 2022. In making that decision, why not think bigger? Why not reach higher? In this post we will discuss setting audacious goals and taking audacious action.

Those that follow me know that I help clients set and achieve audacious goals by thinking bigger, reaching higher, and doing what others think is “impossible.” A critical step in this change management process is getting beyond our ordinary thinking by eliminating excuses.

CAUTION: This post is designed to help you get out of your comfort zone by thinking bigger and reaching higher. Please do not take reckless action that endangers yourself or others. Please make wise decisions.

WHY BE AUDACIOUS

Audacious is defined as: 1. “extremely bold or daring; recklessly brave; fearless.” Instead of constantly playing it safe. Maybe 2022 is time to finally take the action you have been putting off.

Audacious is also defined as: 2. “extremely original; without restriction to prior ideas; highly inventive.” Maybe 2022 is the time to learn or allow yourself to quit settling for a lack of a solution and turn your attention to creating the desired solution.

Audacious also has a 3rd, less desirable definition. 3. “Bold in defiance of convention, propriety, law, or the like; insolent; brazen, lively; unrestrained; uninhibited.” (Dictionary.com) . While we don’t want to be the troublemaker, maybe now is the perfect time to think beyond the limited conventional thinking.

Maybe 2022 is your opportunity to be unrestrained and uninhibited in improving our world.

THE PROBLEM WITH ASKING “WHY?”

Whenever I ask clients and potential clients to consider getting out of their comfort zone and doing what they fear or consider “impossible,” they often respond with the defensive question, “Why?”

It’s a natural thing to do.

I know I used to respond that way.

Instead of considering the exciting possibilities, we recoil and strike back.

But what does that get us?

ORDINARY, COMFORTABLE, FRUSTRATING RESULTS

Without change, specifically audacious change, we suffer with the same problems year after year. We never breakthrough, in part, because we don’t disrupt ourselves. We get comfortable in a world that is safe because it is predictable. We only get to the ultimate by becoming uncomfortable doing what we have never done before.

Asking, “Why?” is our old, defensive self playing it safe using language that closes our thinking and limits opportunities. It’s our excuse for never reaching our ultimate potential.

But asking, “What if I . . .?” and “Why not?” is pivotal language that not only opens doors to new ideas and opportunities, but language that creates inspiration and commitment that takes us to the top level.

I know about that pivotal language because I studied the emotional power of language in my master’s and Ph.D. programs. The words we tell ourselves, either vocalized or in our head, hold the power to create or destroy. “Why?” is looking for an excuse NOT to act. “Why not?” is someone holding the door open for you and asking, “How can I help you?”

Closing ourselves off to our best results is the very definition of stupid, according to my 2021 book, “Pivoting From S.T.U.P.I.D.: in Times of How to Make S.M.A.R.T. Decisions and Stop Being S.T.U.P.I.D. in Times of Opportunity.”

WHAT IF I . . .?”

  • Imagine being bold enough to take the daring step instead of playing it safe.
  • Imagine tackling the challenge instead of deflecting it back to someone else.
  • Imagine pushing yourself farther than you have ever pushed yourself before.

Asking “What if I . . . ?” takes our eyes off of the risks and pivots our perspective away from the potential disaster. Saying it aloud gives hope instead of the fatalist ending of the worrier.

I’m not asking you to be reckless. I’m simply asking you to consider an idea outside of your comfort zone.

  • What if I did just one more? (Wrote one more sentence, revised the copy one more time, ran one more mile, made one more sales call, etc.).
  • What if I shifted my perspective about my career or business?
  • What if I revisited opportunities that I passed on last year?
  • What if I worked smarter?
  • What if I hired a coach?
  • What if I revised my marketing?
  • What if I used this opportunity to change jobs or careers?
  • What if I just reconsidered what is most important?
  • What if I took the critical action at the right time?

Being audacious isn’t limited to just doing one more but it starts there.

Too many are comfortable complaining. Listen and you will hear the same old complaints out of the same people who will never offer a solution.

Are you tired of hearing those complaints? Are you tired of complaining about the same problems? If so, isn’t it time to make your world better? Isn’t it time to make the world around us better? Isn’t it time to shut up and quit putting up with the things we don’t like, want, or need?

CAUTION: We don’t have to lead a violent rebellion to make disruptive innovation. We also don’t need to be a jerk, mean manager, or dictatorial leader. Being audacious means thinking bigger and reaching higher to make improvements no one considered impossible. It means politely but firmly disagreeing when others say, “That’s impossible” when we know it can be feasible with the right resources.

WHY NOT?

Asking, “why not?” opens our minds to what can be.

It entices us out of our couch potato comfortable world and into a world of adventure, filled with intrigue and wonder.

When explained in this way, why would anyone settle for ordinary when the ultimate is within reach?

Change your language. Instead of defensively asking, “Why?” Consider asking, “What if I did . . .?” and then “Why not?”

YOUR CHALLENGE

2022 offers incredible opportunities, if not even better ones. The first step is to ask, “What if I . . .?”

Remember, your success is your choice.

Forget the excuses. They only pave the way to disappointment.

Imagine what you can do.

In spite of the last two years, we still have tremendous opportunities.

The key is to open our eyes and mind. Lift your chin, focus on the horizon. Allow yourself to imagine what success is possible in 2022 when you dare to accept the challenge, plan strategically, and then work to make it reality.

Imagine what you can do when you quit defending comfort and embracing adventure.

  • Challenge yourself (or your team) beyond what you have before.
  • Challenge yourself (and your team) to dream of what you ultimately want.
  • Challenge yourself (and your team) to work be working harder, longer, or smarter.
  • Challenge yourself and your team to provide products and services that are better, faster, cheaper, or easier.

Ask the Ask the provocative question, “What if I . . .?” to achieve audacious success.
